Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) is a global payments technology company headquartered in San Francisco, California. Visa connects consumers, businesses, financial institutions and governments in more than 200 countries and territories, enabling them to use digital currency instead of cash and checks.[3] The company facilitates the processing of transactions on behalf of financial institutions and merchants through VisaNet, one of the world’s most advanced processing networks capable of handling more than 10,000 transactions per second.[4] In 2009, Visa’s global network processed 62 billion transactions with a total volume of $4.4 trillion.[5]
Visa does not issue cards, extend credit or set rates and fees for consumers; rather, Visa provides financial institutions with Visa-branded payment products that they then use to offer credit, debit, prepaid and cash-access programs to their customers. In 2008, according to The Nilson Report, Visa held a 38.3% market share of the credit card marketplace and 60.7% of the debit card marketplace in the United States.[6]

Visa has operations across Asia-Pacific, North America, Central and South America, Caribbean, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa and Middle East. Visa Europe is a separate membership entity that is an exclusive licensee of Visa Inc.’s trademarks and technology in the European region.

In mid-September 1958, Bank of America (BofA) launched its pioneering BankAmericard credit card program in Fresno, California with an initial mailing of 60,000 unsolicited credit cards.[7] The original idea was the brainchild of BofA's in-house product development think tank, the Customer Services Research Group, and its leader, Joseph P. Williams, who convinced senior BofA executives in 1956 to let him pursue what became the world's first successful credit card "drop," or mass mailing of unsolicited credit cards (that is, actual working cards, not mere applications) to a large population.[8]
Williams' accomplishment was in the successful implementation of the all-purpose credit card, not in coming up with the idea.[9] By the mid-1950s, the typical middle-class American already maintained revolving credit accounts with several different merchants, which was clearly inefficient and inconvenient due to the need to carry so many cards and pay so many separate bills each month.[10] The need for a unified financial instrument was already palpably obvious to the American financial services industry, but no one could figure out how to do it. There were already charge cards like Diners Club (which had to be paid in full at the end of each billing cycle), and "by the mid-1950s, there had been at least a dozen attempts to create an all-purpose credit card."[10] However, these prior attempts had been carried out by small banks which lacked the resources to make them work.[10] Williams and his team studied these failures carefully and believed they could avoid replicating those banks' mistakes; they also studied existing revolving credit operations at Sears and Mobil Oil to learn why they were successful.[11] Fresno was selected for its population of 250,000 (big enough to make a credit card work, small enough to control initial startup cost), BofA's market share of that population (45%), and relative isolation, to control public relations damage in case the project failed.[12]
The 1958 test at first went smoothly, but then BofA panicked when it confirmed rumors that another bank was about to initiate its own drop in San Francisco, BofA's home market.[13] By March 1959, drops began in San Francisco and Sacramento; by June, BofA was dropping cards in Los Angeles; by October, the entire state had been saturated with over 2 million credit cards, and BankAmericard was being accepted by 20,000 merchants.[14] However, the program was riddled with problems, as Williams (who had never worked in a bank's loan department) had been too earnest and trusting in his belief in the basic goodness of the bank's customers, and he resigned in December 1959.[15] 22% of accounts were delinquent, not the 4% expected, and police departments around the state were confronted by numerous incidents of the brand new crime of credit card fraud.[16] Both politicians and journalists joined the general uproar against Bank of America and its newfangled credit card, especially when it was pointed out that the cardholder agreement held customers liable for all charges, even those resulting from fraud.[17] BofA officially lost over $8.8 million on the launch of BankAmericard, but when the full cost of advertising and overhead was included, the bank's actual loss was probably around $20 million.[17]
However, after purging Williams and his proteges, BofA management realized that BankAmericard was salvageable.[18] They conducted a "massive effort" to clean up after Williams, imposed proper financial controls, published an open letter to 3 million households across the state apologizing for the mess they had caused, and eventually were able to make the new financial instrument work.[19]
The original goal of BofA was to offer the BankAmericard product across California, but in 1965, BofA began to sign licensing agreements with a group of banks outside of California. Over the following 11 years, various banks licensed the card system from Bank of America, thus forming a network of banks backing the BankAmericard system across the United States.[20] The "drops" of unsolicited credit cards continued unabated, thanks to BofA and its licensees and competitors, until they were outlawed in 1970 due to the serious financial chaos they caused, but not before over 100 million credit cards had been distributed into the American population.[21]
During the late 1960s, BofA also licensed the BankAmericard program to banks in several other countries, which began issuing cards with localized brand names. For example:
In Canada, an alliance of banks (including Toronto-Dominion Bank, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Royal Bank of Canada, Banque Canadienne Nationale and Bank of Nova Scotia) issued credit cards under the Chargex name from 1968 to 1977.
In France, it was known as Carte Bleue (Blue Card). The logo still appears on many French-issued Visa cards today.
In the UK, the only BankAmericard issuer for some years was Barclaycard.
In 1970, Bank of America gave up control of the BankAmericard program.[citation needed] The various BankAmericard issuer banks took control of the program, creating National BankAmericard Inc. (NBI), an independent non-stock corporation which would be in charge of managing, promoting and developing the BankAmericard system within the United States, although Bank of America continued to issue and support the international licenses themselves. By 1972, licenses had been granted in 15 countries. In 1974, IBANCO, a multinational member corporation, was founded in order to manage the international BankAmericard program.

In 1976, the directors of IBANCO determined that bringing the various international networks together into a single network with a single name internationally would be in the best interests of the corporation; however in many countries, there was still reluctance to issue a card associated with Bank of America, even though the association was entirely nominal in nature. For this reason, in 1975 BankAmericard, Chargex, Barclaycard, Carte Bleue, and all other licensees united under the new name, "Visa", which retained the distinctive blue, white and gold flag. NBI became Visa U.S.A., and IBANCO became Visa International.
The term Visa was conceived by the company's founder, Dee Hock. He believed that the word was instantly recognizable in many languages in many countries, and that it also denoted universal acceptance. Nowadays, the term Visa has become a recursive backronym for Visa International Service Association. The term "Visa" may have differing pronunciations around the world. For example, in Canada, advertising, possibly originating in the United States, uses the pronunciation "Veesa", but the common pronunciation among the population is "Veeza"
In October 2007, Bank of America announced it was resurrecting the BankAmericard brand name as the "BankAmericard Rewards Visa."[22]
[edit]Operations

Visa offers through its issuing members the following types of cards:
Debit cards (pay from a checking / savings account)
Credit cards (pay monthly payments with interest)
Prepaid cards (pay from a cash account that has no checkwriting privileges)
Visa operates the PLUS automated teller machine network and the Interlink EFTPOS point-of-sale network, which facilitate the "debit" protocol used with debit cards and prepaid cards. They also provide commercial payment solutions for small businesses, midsize and large corporations, and governments.[23]
[edit]Corporate structure
Prior to October 3, 2007, Visa comprised four non-stock, separately incorporated companies that employed 6000 people worldwide: Visa International Service Association (Visa), the worldwide parent entity, Visa U.S.A. Inc., Visa Canada Association, and Visa Europe Ltd. The latter three separately incorporated regions had the status of group members of Visa International Service Association. The unincorporated regions (Visa Latin America [LAC], Visa Asia Pacific and Visa Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa [CEMEA]) were divisions within Visa.
[edit]IPO and restructuring
On October 11, 2006, Visa announced that some of its businesses would be merged and become a publicly traded company, Visa Inc.[24][25][26] Under the IPO restructuring, Visa Canada, Visa International, and Visa U.S.A. were merged into the new public company. Visa's Western Europe operation became a separate company, owned by its member banks who will also have a minority stake in Visa Inc.[27] In total, more than 35 investment banks participated in the deal in several capacities, most notably as underwriters. The law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell served as counsel to the underwriters, while the law firm White & Case LLP served as counsel to Visa Inc. in the global restructuring process.
On October 3, 2007, Visa completed its corporate restructuring with the formation of Visa Inc. The new company was the first step towards Visa's IPO.[28] The second step came on November 9, 2007, when the new Visa Inc. submitted its $10 billion IPO filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).[29] On February 25, 2008, Visa announced it would go ahead with an IPO of half its shares.[30] The IPO took place on March 18, 2008. Visa sold 406 million shares at US$44 per share ($2 above the high end of the expected $37–42 pricing range), raising US$17.9 billion in the largest initial public offering in U.S. history.[31] On March 20, 2008, the IPO underwriters (including JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs & Co., Banc of America Securities LLC, Citi, HSBC, Merrill Lynch & Co., UBS Investment Bank and Wachovia Securities) exercised their overallotment option, purchasing an additional 40.6 million shares, bringing Visa's total IPO share count to 446.6 million, and bringing the total proceeds to US$19.1 billion.[32] Visa now trades under the ticker symbol "V" on the New York Stock Exchange.[33]
[edit]Operating Regulations
Visa has a set of rules that govern the participation of financial institutions in its payment system. Acquiring banks are responsible for ensuring that their merchants comply with the rules.
Rules address how a cardholder must be identified for security, how transactions may be denied by the bank and how banks may cooperate for fraud prevention, and how to keep that identification and fraud protection standard and non-discriminatory. Other rules govern what creates an enforceable proof of authorization by the cardholder.[34]
The rules prohibit merchants from imposing a minimum or maximum purchase amount in order to accept a Visa card and from charging cardholders a fee for using a Visa card.[34] In ten US states, surcharges for the use of a credit card are forbidden by law (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma and Texas) but a discount for cash is permitted under specific rules.[35] Some countries have banned the no-surcharge rule, most notably the UK[36] and Australia[37] and retailers in those countries may apply surcharges to any credit-card transaction, Visa or otherwise.
Unlike MasterCard, Visa does permit merchants to ask for photo ID, although the merchant rule book states that this practice is "discouraged". As long as the Visa card is signed, a merchant may not deny a transaction because a cardholder refuses to show a photo ID.[34]
Thanks to the Dodd-Frank Act, U.S. merchants can now set a minimum purchase amount on credit card transactions, not to exceed $10. [38] [39]
[edit]New services, security
Recent complications include the addition of exceptions for non-signed purchases by telephone or on the Internet, and an additional security system called "Verified by Visa" for purchases on the Internet.
[edit]Business Overview

[edit]Processing
Visa’s information processing network, VisaNet, facilitates the transfer of value and information among its financial institution clients, consumers, merchants, businesses and governments.[40] Nearly 101 billion authorization, clearing and settlement transactions were processed through VisaNet in calendar year 2009.[41] Based on testing results, Visa estimates that VisaNet is capable of processing more than 10,000 messages per second.[42]
VisaNet operates four processing centers on three continents, all synchronized and operating identical authorization platforms. This enables Visa to shift transaction volume from one data center to another if needed.[42] At the same time, these data centers house multiple authorization engines, essentially “data centers within a data center.”[43] Combined, these advances help to ensure that the VisaNet system is available and has enough processing power to meet the growing demand for electronic payments.[42]
Because of VisaNet’s centralized architecture, Visa can also offer enhanced risk management,[44] dispute processing,[45] loyalty programs[46] and other information-based services.
[edit]Innovation
Beyond the payment products listed above, recent innovations from Visa include:
Money Transfer — Visa Money Transfer is a person-to-person payment platform that enables the transfer of funds from account to account using the Visa network.[47]
Chip Technology — In a number of regions, Visa supports the deployment of chip technology, whether EMV contact chip or contactless Visa payWave.[48]
Mobile Payments and Services — Visa’s mobile strategy is designed to take advantage of its global network to deliver mobile payments, mobile money transfer, mobile acceptance and value-added services.[49]
eCommerce — Visa is one of the most widely accepted payment brands online.[50] Visa protects online transactions through multiple layers of security, including Verified by Visa, allowing issuers to authenticate cardholders in online transactions.[51]
[edit]Security
Visa’s approach to security focuses on: securing the payments environment to protect card data, monitoring, identifying and preventing fraud through technology and best practices; managing the impact of fraud by helping issuers and acquirers recover from its effects; maintaining trust in Visa payments through merchant and consumer education and creating an environment of partnership by promoting industry engagement and accountability around security.[52]
[edit]PayWave

In September 2007, Visa introduced Visa payWave, a contactless payment technology feature that allows cardholders to wave their card in front of contact-less payment terminals without the need to physically swipe or insert the card into a point-of-sale device.[53] This is similar to the MasterCard PayPass service, with both using RFID technology.
In Europe, Visa has introduced the V PAY card which is chip-only and PIN-only.[54]

[edit]Logo design

BankAmericard acceptance mark
The blue and gold in Visa's logo were originally chosen to represent the blue sky and golden-colored hills of California, where the legacy Bank of America was founded.
The Visa symbol is used by merchants to denote the acceptance of Visa payment cards.
In 2006, Visa removed its trademark flag logo from all its cards, websites and retailer's windows. This was the first time that Visa had changed its logo.[55]
The new logo has a simple white background with the name Visa in blue with an orange flick on the 'V' (shown in the infobox at the top of this page).
For the new Visa Debit and Visa Electron logo, see the relevant pages.
[edit]Dove hologram

The hologram
In 1984, most Visa cards around the world began to feature a hologram of a dove on its face, generally under the last four digits of the Visa number. This was implemented as a security feature - true holograms would appear 3-dimensional and the image would change as the card was turned. At the same time, the Visa logo, which had previously covered the whole card face, was reduced in size to a strip on the card's right incorporating the hologram. This allowed issuing banks to customize the appearance of the card. Similar changes were implemented with MasterCard cards.
On most Visa cards, holding the face of the card under an ultraviolet light will reveal the dove picture, as an additional security test. (On newer Visa cards, the UV dove is replaced by a small V over the Visa logo.)
Beginning in 2005, the Visa standard was changed to allow for the hologram to be placed on the back of the card, or to be replaced with a holographic magnetic stripe ("HoloMag").[56] The HoloMag card was shown to occasionally cause interference with card readers, so Visa eventually withdrew designs of HoloMag cards and reverted to traditional magnetic strips.[57][dead link]
[edit]Sponsorships

[edit]Olympics and Paralympics
Visa has been a worldwide sponsor of the Olympic Games since 1986 and is the only card accepted at all Olympic venues. Its current contract with the IOC and IPC as the exclusive services sponsor will continue through 2020.[58] This includes the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, London 2012 Olympic Games, the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games, the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, and the 2020 Olympic Games. However, for London this may change following an Office of Fair Trade intervention.
For the 2008 Olympics Visa ran a sweepstakes offering a chance to win a trip to Beijing to watch the Olympics live. On September 29, 2009 it was announced that Visa will be the official sponsor of the United Kingdom Olympic and Paralympic team (Team 2012) at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.[59]
Visa extended its partnership with the International Paralympic Committee through 2012, which includes the 2010 Vancouver Paralympic Winter Games and the 2012 London Paralympic Games. In 2002, Visa became the first global sponsor of the IPC.[60]
[edit]Others
Visa is currently the shirt sponsor for the Argentina national rugby union team, nicknamed the Pumas. Also, Visa sponsors the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana, the most important football club tournaments in South America.
Until 2005, Visa was the exclusive sponsor of the Triple Crown thoroughbred tournament.
Visa sponsored the Rugby World Cup, and the 2007 tournament in France was its last.[61]
In 2007, Visa became sponsor of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The FIFA partnership provides Visa with global rights to a broad range of FIFA activities - including both the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Women's World Cup.
Since 1995, Visa has sponsored the U.S. NFL and a number of NFL teams, including the San Francisco 49ers whose practice jerseys display the Visa logo. <[4] Visa's sponsorship of the NFL currently extends through the 2014 season.[62]
Visa sponsored PacWest Racing's IndyCar team in 1995 and 1996, with drivers Danny Sullivan and Mark Blundell respectively.

sell gold bullion

type='html'>

Of all the precious metals, gold is the most popular as an investment.[1] Investors generally buy gold as a hedge or safe haven against any economic, political, social, or fiat currency crises (including investment market declines, burgeoning national debt, currency failure, inflation, war and social unrest). The gold market is also subject to speculation as other commodities are, especially through the use of futures contracts and derivatives. The history of the gold standard, the role of gold reserves in central banking, gold's low correlation with other commodity prices, and its pricing in relation to fiat currencies during the financial crisis of 2007–2010, suggest that gold has features of being money.[2][3]
Gold price

Gold has been used throughout history as money and has been a relative standard for currency equivalents specific to economic regions or countries. Many European countries implemented gold standards in the later part of the 19th century until these were dismantled in the financial crises involving World War I. After World War II, the Bretton Woods system pegged the United States dollar to gold at a rate of US$35 per troy ounce. The system existed until the 1971 Nixon Shock, when the US unilaterally suspended the direct convertibility of the United States dollar to gold and made the transition to a fiat currency system. The last currency to be divorced from gold was the Swiss Franc in 2000.

Since 1919 the most common benchmark for the price of gold has been the London gold fixing, a twice-daily telephone meeting of representatives from five bullion-trading firms of the London bullion market. Furthermore, gold is traded continuously throughout the world based on the intra-day spot price, derived from over-the-counter gold-trading markets around the world (code "XAU"). The following table sets forth the gold price versus various assets and key statistics:

In March 2008, the gold price exceeded US$1,000,[9] achieving a nominal high of US$1,004.38. In real terms, actual value was still well below the US$599 peak in 1981 (equivalent to $1417 in U.S. 2008 dollar value). After the March 2008 spike, gold prices declined to a low of US$712.30 per ounce in November. Pricing soon resumed on upward momentum by temporarily breaking the US$1000 barrier again in late February 2009 but regressed moderately later in the quarter.
Later in 2009, the March 2008 intra-day spot price record of US$1,033.90 was broken several times in October, as the price of gold entered parabolic stages of successively new highs when a spike reversal to $1226 initiated a retrace of the price to the mid-October levels.
On October 14, 2010, Gold closed at a new nominal high of $1373.25 in NYMEX.[10] On October 14, 2010 gold prices touched an all time high with an intra-day spot price reaching $1,387.30.[11]
[edit]Factors influencing the gold price

Today, like most commodities, the price of gold is driven by supply and demand as well as speculation. However unlike most other commodities, hoarding (saving) and disposal plays a larger role in affecting its price than its consumption. Most of the gold ever mined still exists in accessible form, such as bullion and mass-produced jewelry, with little value over its fine weight — and is thus potentially able to come back onto the gold market for the right price.[12][13] At the end of 2006, it was estimated that all the gold ever mined totaled 158,000 tonnes (156,000 LT; 174,000 ST).[14] This can be represented by a cube with an edge length of 20.2 metres (66 ft).
At the end of 2004 central banks and official organizations held 19 percent of all above-ground gold as official gold reserves.[15] Given the huge quantity of gold stored above-ground compared to the annual production, the price of gold is mainly affected by changes in sentiment, rather than changes in annual production.[16] According to the World Gold Council, annual mine production of gold over the last few years has been close to 2,500 tonnes.[17] About 2,000 tonnes goes into jewellery or industrial/dental production, and around 500 tonnes goes to retail investors and exchange traded gold funds.[17] This translates to an annual demand for gold to be 1,000 tonnes in excess over mine production which has come from central bank sales and other disposal.[17]
Central banks and the International Monetary Fund play an important role in the gold price. The ten year Washington Agreement on Gold (WAG), which dates from September 1999, limited gold sales by its members (Europe, United States, Japan, Australia, Bank for International Settlements and the International Monetary Fund) to less than 500 tonnes a year.[18] European central banks, such as the Bank of England and Swiss National Bank, were key sellers of gold over this period.[19] In 2009, this agreement was extended for a further five years, but with a smaller annual sales limit of 400 tonnes.[20]
Although central banks do not generally announce gold purchases in advance, some, such as Russia, have expressed interest in growing their gold reserves again as of late 2005.[21] In early 2006, China, which only holds 1.3% of its reserves in gold,[22] announced that it was looking for ways to improve the returns on its official reserves. Some bulls hope that this signals that China might reposition more of its holdings into gold in line with other Central Banks. India has recently purchased over 200 tons of gold which has led to a surge in prices.[23]
The price of gold is also affected by various well-documented mechanisms of artificial price suppression, arising from fractional-reserve banking and naked short selling in gold, and particularly involving the London Bullion Market Association, the United States Federal Reserve System, and the banks HSBC and JPMorgan Chase.[24][25][26][27] Gold market observers have noted for many years that the price of gold tends to fall artificially at the start of New York trading.[28]
Bank failures
When dollars were fully convertible into gold, both were regarded as money. However, most people preferred to carry around paper banknotes rather than the somewhat heavier and less divisible gold coins. If people feared their bank would fail, a bank run might have been the result. This happened in the USA during the Great Depression of the 1930s, leading President Roosevelt to impose a national emergency and issue an executive order outlawing the ownership of gold by US citizens.[29] There was only one prosecution under the order, and in that case the order was ruled invalid by federal judge John M. Woolsey, on the technical grounds that the order was signed by the President, not the Secretary of the Treasury as required.[30]
Low or negative real interest rates
If the return on bonds, equities and real estate is not adequately compensating for risk and inflation then the demand for gold and other alternative investments such as commodities increases. An example of this is the period of Stagflation that occurred during the 1970s and which led to an economic bubble forming in precious metals.[31][32]
War, invasion, looting, crisis
In times of national crisis, people fear that their assets may be seized and that the currency may become worthless. They see gold as a solid asset which will always buy food or transportation. Thus in times of great uncertainty, particularly when war is feared, the demand for gold rises.[33][34]

Bars

1 troy ounce (31 g) gold bar with certificate
The most traditional way of investing in gold is by buying bullion gold bars. In some countries, like Argentina, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, these can easily be bought or sold at the major banks. Alternatively, there are bullion dealers that provide the same service. Bars are available in various sizes. For example in Europe, Good Delivery bars are approximately 400 troy ounces (12 kg).[35] 1 kilogram (32 ozt) are also popular, although many other weights exist, such as the 10oz, 1oz, 10 g, 100 g, 1 Kg, and 1 Tael, and 1 Tola.
Bars generally carry lower price premiums than gold bullion coins. However larger bars carry an increased risk of forgery due to their less stringent parameters for appearance. While bullion coins can be easily weighed and measured against known values, most bars cannot, and gold buyers often have bars re-assayed. Larger bars also have a greater volume in which to create a partial forgery using a tungsten-filled cavity, which may not be revealed by an assay.[36]
Efforts to combat gold bar counterfeiting include kinebars which employ a unique holographic technology and are manufactured by the Argor-Heraeus refinery in Switzerland .
[edit]Coins

The faces of a Krugerrand, the most common gold bullion coin.
Gold coins are a common way of owning gold. Bullion coins are priced according to their fine weight, plus a small premium based on supply and demand (as opposed to numismatic gold coins which are priced mainly by supply and demand).
The Krugerrand is the most widely-held gold bullion coin, with 46,000,000 troy ounces (1,400 tonnes) in circulation. Other common gold bullion coins include the Australian Gold Nugget (Kangaroo), Austrian Philharmoniker (Philharmonic), Austrian 100 Corona, Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, Chinese Gold Panda, French Coq d’Or (Golden Rooster), Mexican Gold 50 Peso, British Sovereign, and American Gold Eagle.
Coins may be purchased from a variety of dealers both large and small. Fake gold coins are not uncommon, and are usually made of gold-plated lead. Like gold bars, large Swiss and Liechtenstein banks buy and sell bullion coins.
[edit]Exchange-traded instruments
Gold exchange-traded funds (or GETFs) may include ETFs, ETNs, and CEFs which are traded like shares on the major stock exchanges. The first gold ETF, Gold Bullion Securities (ticker symbol "GOLD"), was launched in March 2003 on the Australian Stock Exchange, and originally represented exactly 0.1 troy ounces (3.1 g) of gold.
Gold ETFs represent an easy way to gain exposure to the gold price, without the inconvenience of storing physical bars. However exchange-traded gold instruments, even those which hold physical gold for the benefit of the investor, carry risks beyond those inherent in the precious metal itself. For example the most popular gold ETF (GLD) has been widely criticized, and even compared with mortgage-backed securities, due to features of its complex structure.[24][37][38][39][40]
Typically a small commission is charged for trading in gold ETFs and a small annual storage fee is charged. The annual expenses of the fund such as storage, insurance, and management fees are charged by selling a small amount of gold represented by each certificate, so the amount of gold in each certificate will gradually decline over time.
Exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, are investment companies that are legally classified as open-end companies or Unit Investment Trusts (UITs), but that differ from traditional open-end companies and UITs.[41] The main differences are that ETFs do not sell directly to investors and they issue their shares in what are called "Creation Units" (large blocks such as blocks of 50,000 shares). Also, the Creation Units may not be purchased with cash but a basket of securities that mirrors the ETF's portfolio. Usually, the Creation Units are split up and re-sold on a secondary market.
ETF shares can be sold in basically two ways. The investors can sell the individual shares to other investors, or they can sell the Creation Units back to the ETF. In addition, ETFs generally redeem Creation Units by giving investors the securities that comprise the portfolio instead of cash. Because of the limited redeemability of ETF shares, ETFs are not considered to be and may not call themselves mutual funds.[41]

Gold certificates allow gold investors to avoid the risks and costs associated with the transfer and storage of physical bullion (such as theft, large bid-offer spread, and metallurgical assay costs) by taking on a different set of risks and costs associated with the certificate itself (such as commissions, storage fees, and various types of credit risk).
Banks may issue gold certificates for gold which is allocated (non-fungible) or unallocated (fungible or pooled). Unallocated gold certificates are a form of fractional reserve banking and do not guarantee an equal exchange for metal in the event of a run on the issuing bank's gold on deposit.[42] Allocated gold certificates should be correlated with specific numbered bars, although it is difficult to determine whether a bank is improperly allocating a single bar to more than one party.[43]
The first paper bank notes were gold certificates. They were first issued in the 17th century when they were used by goldsmiths in England and The Netherlands for customers who kept deposits of gold bullion into their safe-keeping. Two centuries later, the gold certificates began being issued in the United States when the US Treasury issued such certificates that could be exchanged for gold. The United States Government first authorized the use of the gold certificates in 1863. In the early 1930s the US Government restricted the private gold ownership in the United States and therefore, the gold certificates stopped circulating as money. Nowadays, gold certificates are still issued by gold pool programs in Australia and the United States, as well as by banks in Germany and Switzerland.
[edit]Accounts
Many types of gold "accounts" are available. Different accounts impose varying types of intermediation between the client and their gold. One of the most important differences between accounts is whether the gold is held on an allocated (non-fungible) or unallocated (fungible) basis. Another major difference is the strength of the account holder's claim on the gold, in the event that the account administrator faces gold-denominated liabilities (due to a short or naked short position in gold for example), asset forfeiture, or bankruptcy.
Many banks offer gold accounts where gold can be instantly bought or sold just like any foreign currency on a fractional reserve (non-allocated, fungible) basis. Swiss banks offer similar service on an allocated (non-fungible) basis. Pool accounts, such as those offered by Kitco, facilitate highly liquid but unallocated claims on gold owned by the company. Digital gold currency systems operate like pool accounts and additionally allow the direct transfer of fungible gold between members of the service. BullionVault and Anglo Far-East allow clients to create a bailment on allocated (non-fungible) gold, which becomes the legal property of the buyer.
[edit]Derivatives, CFDs and spread betting
Derivatives, such as gold forwards, futures and options, currently trade on various exchanges around the world and over-the-counter (OTC) directly in the private market. In the U.S., gold futures are primarily traded on the New York Commodities Exchange (COMEX) and Euronext.liffe. In India, gold futures are traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) and Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX).[44]
As of 2009, holders of COMEX gold futures have experienced problems taking delivery of their metal. Along with chronic delivery delays, some investors have received delivery of bars not matching their contract in serial number and weight. The delays cannot be easily explained by slow warehouse movements, as the daily reports of these movements show little activity. Because of these problems, there are concerns that COMEX may not have the gold inventory to back its existing warehouse receipts.[45]
Firms such as Cantor Index, CMC Markets, IG Index and City Index, all from the UK, provide contract for difference (CFD) or spread bets on the price of gold.
[edit]Mining companies
These do not represent gold at all, but rather are shares in gold mining companies. If the gold price rises, the profits of the gold mining company could be expected to rise and as a result the share price may rise. However, there are many factors to take into account and it is not always the case that a share price will rise when the gold price increases.
Unlike gold bullion, which is regarded as a safe haven asset, unhedged gold shares or funds are regarded as high risk and extremely volatile. This volatility is due to the inherent leverage in the mining sector. For example, if you own a share in a gold mine where the costs of production are $300 per ounce and the price of gold is $600, the mine's profit margin will be $300. A 10% increase in the gold price to $660 per ounce will push that margin up to $360, which actually represents a 20% increase in the mine's profitability, and potentially a 20% increase in the share price. Conversely, a 10% fall in the gold price to $540 will decrease that margin to $240, which actually represents a 20% fall in the mine's profitability, and potentially a 20% decrease in the share price. The amplification of gold mining profits during periods of rising prices can cause a gold rush in mining exploration.
To reduce this volatility, some gold mining companies hedge the gold price up to 18 months in advance. This provides the mining company and investor with less exposure to short term gold price fluctuations, but reduces potential returns when the gold price is rising.

Computer beveiliging

Wie zou willen breken in mijn computer thuis?

How to Connect to Hidden Wireless Networks

type='html'>I will continue our Windows 7 Networking series with a guide on how to connect to hidden wireless networks. Hidden wireless networks are those networks which do not broadcast their Network ID (SSID). While not that many people use such networks, some have the feeling of a bit more security to have their home wireless network hidden from unwanted guests. In this guide I will share with you the steps for making a successful connection.
Step 1: Get the Details of the Hidden Wireless Network

First and foremost, you need to know all the identification and connection details of the hidden wireless network you want to connect to. Therefore, open your router's configuration page and go to the Wireless configuration menu. Write down the values for the Network ID (SSID) and Security fields. Depending on what type of security your wireless network has, you will need to write down the value of another important field, as following:

* For WEP security - note the value of the WEP Key field.
* For WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK(AES) security - note the value of the Preshare Key field.

NOTE: If your wireless network has no security enabled, then you only need to know the value of the Network ID (SSID) field. 802.1X, WPA and WPA2(AES) security is generally used in enterprise networks and most likely your laptop will be pre-configured to connect to your corporate wireless network. Therefore this guide won't apply to corporate networks.

Once you have all these three details, you can go ahead with step 2.
Step 2: Start the 'Set Up a Connection or Network' Wizard

To do this, you need to open the Network and Sharing Center: go to Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center. In the Network and Sharing Center window you will see lots of shortcuts. Click on the one that says 'Set up a new connection or network'.

Wireless Networks

The 'Set Up a Connection or Network' wizard will now start. From the list of available options, select 'Manually connect to a wireless network' and click on Next.

Wireless Networks
Step 3: Complete the Details of the Wireless Network

Now you will have to complete all the fields shown in this window. The first one is called Network name. In it, type the name of the wireless network you want to connect to, which is the equivalent of the Network ID (SSID) field from your router's wireless configuration menus.

Wireless Networks

The next field that needs to be completed is the Security type used by your wireless network. Depending on the type of security used, make the following selection:

* For WEP security - select WEP.
* For WPA-PSK security - select WPA-Personal.
* For WPA2-PSK(AES) security - select WPA2-Personal.

NOTE: If your wireless network has no security enabled, then select No authentication (Open).

Wireless Networks

Now it is time to select the appropriate type of encryption. If you are using WPA2-PSK(AES) security, make sure you select AES. Otherwise, leave the default value Windows 7 gives you.

Wireless Networks

For WEP, WPA2 Personal and WPA Personal you will have to enter the security key as follows:

* For WEP security - the value of the WEP Key field.
* For WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK(AES) security - the value of the Preshare Key field.

Wireless Networks

If you are in a public environment, then it is a good idea to check the 'Hide characters' box. Also, don't forget to check the other two boxes: 'Start this connection automatically' and 'Connect even if the network is not broadcasting'. These two allow you to connect automatically to the hidden wireless network. Once all data is completed, click on Next.

When done, you will see a message which says that you have successfully added the wireless network to your computer. If you are unsure on any of the settings, you can click on 'Change connection settings' and review them all.

Wireless Networks

This will open a window where you can change all your settings and looks like the screenshot below. It can be opened at any time by going to Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Manage Wireless Networks and double clicking on the wireless network.

Wireless Networks

When done, Windows 7 will automatically connect to the hidden wireless network. Also, the wireless network icon from the taskbar will change as shown below.

Conclusion

As you can see from this guide, connecting to hidden wireless networks requires a bit more work than connecting to public ones. However, if you pay a bit of attention and don't skip any of these steps, it can be done in just a few minutes. If you have any useful tips on connecting to hidden wireless networks, don't hesitate to leave a comment.

Network Locations Explained

Net werk locatie: Home vs. werk vs. public

Norton Internet Security 2011 Reviewing

type='html'>Today we welcome Norton Internet Security 2011 to the Security for Everyone series. When desktop security is considered, the Norton name is not far behind. With a history that dates back more than 25 years, and the claim of being the first antivirus program to perform automatic updates, this is easy to understand. Norton has not been without its problems though. Over time Norton became known not only for its utilities but also for the performance impact it had on systems. The previous review of Norton Internet Security 2010 found performance was not an issue and awarded the first "Buy for Grandma!" badge to Norton. In this review we'll see if Norton stays in Grandma's good graces.
First Impressions

A trial version of Norton Internet Security 2011 can be downloaded from the Norton site via this link. Unfortunately, as cited in the previous review, you will be required to provide credit card information before downloading the trial version. Your credit card will be charged at the end of the trial period if you do not cancel the service. This is simply a poor practice on the part of Norton. I imagine the revenue generated as a result of people that do not cancel their trial is significant enough for them to continue this shadowy tactic. Unfortunate. Thankfully, you can choose to download from sources such as SoftPedia and CNET, without having to provide such information.

Once you download Norton Internet Security 2011 you'll find the install very simple. The only customization option is to choose the install directory. If you don't choose to change the install directory this is really a one click install. Another member of the 7 Tutorials team recently upgraded their 2010 version and found the upgrade as simple as the fresh install. With the upgrade only a single reboot was required and the settings of the uninstalled 2010 version were imported into the 2011 upgrade.

Upon completion of a fresh install you are met with a relatively clean, modern looking interface. An initial update is performed within a few minutes and the scanning is set to run when the system is idle. The latter makes a scheduled scan unnecessary.

Norton Internet Security 2011

A review of Windows security settings and services finds Norton does end the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender applications. I was also pleased to find I could not end the Norton services nor could I cancel the running process. I also reviewed the initial performance impact and found surprisingly little, even while running an initial scan. The team at av-comparatives.org found similar results when they awarded Symantec, Norton's parent company, the Advanced+ rating in the August 2010 Performance test.

Aside from the download process itself, my impression of Norton Internet Security 2011 is positive. The proper system maintenance is performed and the initial interface, while a bit distracting with the worldwide cybercrime activity map, is not intimidating.
Ease of Use and Configuration

The main interface displays a system status in the header of the application. This is followed by links to access settings, performance and a variety of support related links. Within a section titled 'Computer Protection' you'll find a link to perform a scan, access history, manage the quarantine, view application ratings and see when LiveUpdate last performed an update.

Norton Internet Security 2011

The right side of the interface is dedicated to displaying the status of the various security services. The status is indicated by an orange (on) or red (off) toggle switch. This is a good use of real estate and serves as a nice dashboard of enabled services. When you choose to turn off a service Norton displays a prompt warning of the effects of doing so and provides a drop down list where you can choose the duration of time the service should be left off. This is a nice measure which encourages the continued protection of your system.

Norton Internet Security 2011

If you're unsure of what function a service performs you can select the name of the service to see a short description.

Norton Internet Security 2011

Selecting the Settings link in the header will deliver you to the application settings. Here you will find all settings in a paneled or accordion style navigation system. Settings are broken into five categories: Computer Settings, Network Settings, Web Settings, Miscellaneous Settings and Parental controls.

Norton Internet Security 2011

Computer Settings are primarily used to define scan settings. These settings include the default action for specific types of threats, the level of heuristic protection and items to exclude from scans among many others. Firewall and Intrusion Prevention settings are found in the Network Settings category. Settings associated with the browser, antiphishing and malicious pages are found in the Web Settings category.

My initial thought was there are too many settings and they are too loosely defined. After thorough review I don't think the settings are too many and if a setting is confusing each sub category provides access to the help section via the question mark icon on the right side of the interface. It appears the default settings are adequate which should mean wandering into the settings won't be an immediate requirement.
Firewall

The Norton Internet Security 2011 Firewall provides several options for customization. The firewall settings are found within the Network Settings category of the main application settings. Most of the settings you might be interested in will be in the Smart Firewall section and include the ability to create and modify network rules via advanced settings, set Program Control and configure Trust Control.

Norton appears to do a fine job of identifying which programs are friendly and allows them access to the network. You can modify this list or add programs easily enough with a few clicks.

Norton Internet Security 2011

The Trust Control configuration is interesting as it allows you to choose the devices in your network that should be trusted. This will come in handy if you are the sort that has many network devices such as network storage or streaming media devices. Identifying them as trusted will eliminate many prompts.

When testing a firewall I like to throw a couple of intrusive scans at the device. This provides an opportunity to see just what kind of information is being returned to a would be attacker. Thankfully an intrusive against the Norton Internet Security 2011 firewall provided next to no information and nothing that might of value.

Norton Internet Security 2011

The default firewall configuration provides ample protection for the home user without being intrusive. Norton has done a good job of not requiring any extensive tweaking.
Antivirus and Antispyware Features

You will find the Antivirus and Antispyware settings within the Computer Setting category of the main application settings. The defaults here seem well suited to provide strong protection without being intrusive. Norton puts a lot of weight in their SONAR Protection feature which is built upon the significant strength of their user community. SONAR allows for the isolation of threats based on behavior even before a threat has been formally added to the database. With most threats originating online this is an important feature and one Norton has done well to develop.

Norton Internet Security 2011

A nice feature of the Norton scanner is that it will actively scan your system when it is idle. This prevents the need to bother with a scheduled scan, however it should be noted that while you can choose to schedule a scan doing so will disable the idle scanning.

In my own testing, the scanner responded without flaw and identified each threat. The previous review noted that Norton was less than agile when it came to adding new threats to their database. I did not find this to be the case in the 2011 version. Several of the threats I presented were less than ten days old, each identified and quarantined or removed accordingly. Possibly even more notable as a mark of improvement was my visit to a malicious site that had been identified for less than a day. My attempt to visit the site was blocked and the link included in the notification detailed the type of threat that might have been executed had I chosen to continue.

Norton Internet Security 2011

Norton has also received accolades from several independent testing site such as av-comparatives.org and avtest.org. Av-comparatives awared Norton Internet Security 2011 their hightest ranking of Advanced+ and avtest.org found that Norton passed their battery of tests as well. As was previously noted, Norton also fared very well in the av-comparatives performance test conducted in August 2010.

Norton's scanning engine is effective and light on resources. The depth of the database is an asset in this age when numerous new threat strains are identified each day. The idle scanning default and strength of the SONAR feature round out a solid scanning solution.
